Class A Drivers

Truck drivers have a high degree of exposure on the roads so they can sometimes get several ticktes within a relatively short period of time. When four points are accumulated in a 12 month period, California DMV will initiate a suspension for six months.

First a hearing must be requested and granted at DMV to alter the proposed six month suspension.

If the Class A driver does not have a hazardous materials endorsement and does not have a passenger endorsement, then he will be allowed two extra points before being subject to a suspension. In other words if a driver has four point and establishes at the hearing that he holds a Class A license without the two endorsements mentioned above, then he will not be in jeopardy until he accumulates six points in a twelve month period.

If the two extra points are not allowed, then the issue becomes one of driver safety. In order to save the license from suspension for driver safety reasons, DMV must be convinced that the driver is aware of the cause of his problem. Also, he must be capable of changing his driving pattern to correct the problem.

Then, if DMV is persuaded not to suspend the license, it will place the driver on DMV probation. This means that the driver cannot get a traffic conviction or be involved in a responsible accident for one year. If the probation is violated DMV will institute a suspension for violating probation.
